Olympus XA

I’ve been doing research on point-and-shoot film cameras and range finders for a few months, and after going back and forth on a few separate camera models finally decided to pull the trigger on purchasing an Olympus XA. I wanted something compact and easy to use, with a few features to aid shooting. Something that was easy to grab-and-go, that didn’t require as much of time and focus as my Minolta does.

I ordered off Ebay, waited a week, and it arrived in the mail last weekend. I love shooting with this little thing. The controls are simple and easy, and the shutter click is whisper-quiet. The only drawback that I’ve experienced is the very small controls can be a little bit difficult to adjust at times, and there is some delay in charging the flash. This is particularly true of adjusting focus – the square for focusing is sometimes difficult to see and there’s not much space to adjust between 2ft and infinity. I did a test black and white roll to make sure everything is functional; a few choice images are on this post.

Olympus XA with flash unit on. The camera turns on automatically when you open the case. The flash will remain off until the the f-stop on the left is set all the way to the top.
Flash unit detached. This thing is super compact!

I’ll be taking this little one on my trip to Germany and Poland, so look forward to shots and some writing from that. I’m choosing mostly color this time around, so won’t be developing images for the next few posts at home.

Edit 6/17 – Recently dropped off the film rolls from my Germany/Poland trip and picked up a color test roll shot with my Olympus. A few extra images have been added.
