I liked the black-metal-mood of my last set of photos, the ones with the flooded river. Even a month later the waters are still high, and I learned today that up in Duluth, Lake Superior is at its record height. Just some facts about local waters, not particularly relevant but I like the flooded aesthetic and darker mood that this very late spring has provided.
Garrett and I went down by the Mississippi on the east side again to take these moody portraits in early June. I used Sam’s DSLR in tandem with my own 35mm SLR to help with framing and exposure. These color images to me feel more like a draft for the black and white exposures that I chose to take. I’m still figuring out composition, working on focus and especially am learning how to give direction to a model. Editing and adjusting the images in post is also something new to me, something I’m still very unsure of. Accepting that it’s all a work in progress.
Inspiration was anything witch-y, although there’s a bit of whimsy mixed in there as well. Later on we set up the studio in my living room again and shot there. I’m not sure if we were just tired or studio work is more difficult for me, but I’m not as impressed with the images. Part of this process is figuring out where I fit in aesthetically, what I like taking pictures of. Confidently the images outside are the strongest, but I want to continue to work on aesthetic and mood. Garrett was a great partner to work with – will be working more with him in the future.
